Mary Kom Bids Farewell to CommonWealth Games 2022 Trials After Sustaining a Leg Injury

The Commonwealth Games 2022 is on the corner and will play its first game on 28th July, Thursday. The games will be held in Birmingham, England, and go till 8th August, Monday. One boxer from India will set foot in the tournament amongst two, the first being the veteran boxer Mary Kom and the second being Nitu Ghanghas from Haryana.

Six times World Champion Mary Kom played her first round in the trials when she suffered from an injury. She started well and even got a few hits but fell to her knees after putting too much pressure on her feet. Both Mary and Nitu got back and forth in the 48 kg category, but Kom still managed to get on her feet. She sprained her foot badly and had to clutch her knee due to pain.

The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) released an official statement, “Six-time world champion Mary Kom has withdrawn from the ongoing Women’s Boxing Trials for the 2022 Commonwealth Games due to an injury she suffered on Friday. During the 48kg contest against Nitu, the London Olympic bronze medallist Mary Kom sustained a knee injury just after a minute into the opening round but, after medical assistance, the veteran boxer came back into the ring as the bout was resumed.”

It was supposed to be Mary Kom’s last Commonwealth Games before she retires permanently. Though fate wasn’t on her side, she got up with crutches and left the venue. The world champion had omitted the World Championship and Asian Games to ensure her focus on CWG in Birmingham.
