India Wins their First-Ever Thomas Cup 2022 and Defeating Indonesia in the Finals

India won their first-ever Thomas Cup yesterday on 15th May. It was their first qualification to Finals in nearly Seventy-Three years. India now is the 6th country to win the Thomas Cup winning the title. The Indian Men’s Badminton team played against Indonesia to win this Cup yesterday. The Cup was held in Bangkok, Thailand, and it was the ending match of the tournament on Sunday.

It was a big moment for all Indians as it will be the first time we’ve won the Finals of the Thomas Cup. India defeated the fourteen times World Champion Indonesian team in the final and won the game. India joined the winning list with China, Japan, Indonesia, Denmark, and Malaysia to win the Thomas Cup. The Finals started with Lakshya Sen and Olympic Bronze Medalist Anthony Ginting. The first set between the two was a blow to the face as Sen lost by 8-21 to Ginting. It was a difficult start for India but Lakshya made a comeback in the second set and made 21-17. Sen managed to give India the first victory by 1-0 after winning the third set by  21-16.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty entered for the doubles game against Indonesia. They both missed out on the Tokyo Olympics by a small margin. The duo faced World No.1 and World No.2 Kevin Sanjaya and Mohammad Ahsan. Rankireddy and Shetty lost the first set by 18-21. Both shuttlers made a comeback with 23-21 and then 21-19 in the third set.  

Kidambi Srikant was set to go against Jonathan Christie and won both the sets by 21-15 and 23-21, giving India a 3-0 lead. It was an incredible win with zero loss for India, defeated Indonesia in the Finals, and won the Thomas Cup 2022.
