The second half of the IPL 2021 begins on Sunday in Dubai, with Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma taking the field against the Chennai Super Kings. On a personal note, he’ll need to hit three more sixes to become the first Indian batter to reach 400 T20 maximums.
Suresh Raina (324), Virat Kohli (315), and MS Dhoni (303) follow Rohit Sharma as the highest six-hitter among Indians in the shorter format, with 397 sixes.
224 of his 397 sixes have come in the IPL — 173 for MI and 51 for the now-defunct Deccan Chargers – with the rest coming while playing for India, India A, Indians, and Mumbai (in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy).
In T20 cricket, Rohit Sharma is eighth among batsmen with the most sixes. With 1042 maximums, Chris Gayle tops the list, followed by Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell, Brendon McCullum, Shane Watson, AB de Villiers, and Aaron Finch.
Virat Kohli revealed earlier this week that he will step down as India’s T20I captain following the conclusion of the T20 World Cup. He will, however, continue to lead the team in ODIs and Tests.
Kohli has led India to 27 wins, 14 losses, and two ties in 45 T20Is, two of which were won in the Super Over against New Zealand.
Rohit Sharma, India’s current vice-captain, is the most likely choice to succeed Virat Kohli as captain in the limited-overs format. His current captaincy record – 15 wins in 19 T20Is and 5 IPL crowns for MI – is a shining example of his leadership abilities.
For the time being, Sharma will lead Mumbai in the IPL 2021 second half, where they are now fourth in the points standings with four victories and three losses. MI are attempting to win their sixth IPL title and become the first side to win a hat-trick of IPL championships.
