The masses may return for the second phase of the Indian Premier League 2021, which kicks off on September 19 in the United Arab Emirates.
Mubashir Usmani, the general secretary of the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB), was reported by Gulf News as stating that the board will discuss letting fans back into the stands with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the UAE government.
According to Usmani, the ECB will collaborate closely with the BCCI and the UAE government to secure approval for the procedures that must be followed before fans may return to the stadium. In the aftermath of the COVID-19 outbreak, the ECB will discuss the issue with the ICC to assess their spectator needs.
“As hosts, the ECB will work closely with authorities to get clearance for the procedures that must be followed, including fan attendance. We will then discuss this with the BCCI and the ICC to determine their spectator needs. We want our expat and Emirati sports fans to be able to watch the action from the stands in the UAE,” he was reported as adding.
According to reports, the UAE government has granted the go-ahead for the stadium to be filled to 60% capacity for the remaining matches. On September 19, the second phase of the IPL 2021 will commence with a match between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians.
Over the course of 27 days, 31 matches, including qualifiers, will be contested.
BCCI authorities were unavailable to comment on the matter despite many phone calls.
