Former Indian player and present NCA Head VVS Laxman to be Head Coach for Team India amidst Rahul Dravid’s covid recovery. The Asia Cup is a couple of days away, and all six teams are ready to face each other in a two-week-long continental tournament. Team India reached the United Arab Emirates on 23rd August.
Indian Head Coach Rahul Dravid tested positive in the routine covid check-up. He is presently in quarantine and in the recovery period. The BCCI broke the news to the public, and Dravid has very mild symptoms. He will be re-tested in a few days, and if the results come negative, he will present in Dubai before India’s first match against Pakistan.
The BCCI issued a statement announcing VVS Laxman as the interim coach for team India. “Mr. VVS Laxman, Head Cricket, NCA will be the interim Head Coach for Team India for the upcoming ACC Asia Cup 2022, to be played in the UAE. Mr. Laxman, who travelled with the Indian team that play the ODI series in Zimbabwe will oversee the team’s preparation in the absence of Mr. Rahul Dravid, who tested positive for COVID-19 before the team’s departure to the UAE.”
The Cricket Board added that Dravid will be returning if sampled negative. “Mr. Dravid will join the team once he tests negative and is cleared by the BCCI Medical Team. Mr. Laxman has linked up with the squad in Dubai along with vice-captain Mr. KL Rahul, Mr. Deepak Hooda, and Mr. Avesh Khan, who travelled from Harare.”
Indian games began on 28th August with the first match against Pakistan. Rohit Sharma will captain the team, and KL Rahul to be the deputy. Virat Kohli is back in the squad along with newcomer Arshdeep Singh. Pacer Jasprit Bumrah will be absent for the Asia Cup.
