Afghan cricketers’ IPL participation in doubt

With Afghanistan’s political situation deteriorating, uncertainty and unpredictability hang over the futures of its finest cricketers, namely Rashid Khan and Mohammed Nabi, who are scheduled to participate in the remaining IPL matches in the UAE starting September 19.

As President Ashraf Ghani is said to have fled to Tajikistan, the Taliban are poised to take control of the South Asian country.

Rashid and Nabi are now absent from Afghanistan. They are competing in the ‘Hundred’ competition in the United Kingdom. Rashid is a member of the Trent Rockets, while Nabi is a member of the London Spirits.

The BCCI is keeping a close watch on the situation and hopes to see Afghan players compete in the India Premier League.

“It’s too early to make any conclusions, but we’ll keep an eye on things. Nothing has changed for us, and we expect Rashid and other Afghan players to participate in the IPL “PTI quoted a BCCI source as saying.

Rashid and Nabi are both Sunrisers Hyderabad players.

The BCCI is likely to discuss the matter with the Afghanistan Cricket Board.

According to the ICC’s FTP calendar, Afghanistan is slated to travel to Sri Lanka for six white-ball games this month, but the final schedule has yet to be released.

Afghanistan’s T20 captain is Rashid.

Rashid, Nabi, and Mujeeb Zadran are three Afghan players who often appear on IPL teams. Rashid is presently one of the most in-demand T20 freelancers in the world.

As Afghanistan faces its greatest socio-political crisis in two decades, both Nabi and Rashid have asked international leaders to help.

“Greetings, World Leaders! My nation is in turmoil; every day, thousands of innocent people, including children and women, are murdered, and homes and property are destroyed. Thousands of families have been uprooted. Please don’t abandon us to the turmoil. Stop murdering Afghans and ruining the country. Peace is what we seek,” Rashid made the announcement through Twitter a few days ago.
