Former Indian player Gautam Gambhir talked about how a senior player wanted to take the conversation away from the 1983 World Cup. In the history of Indian cricket, there are two most glorified moments. India won the World Cup twice, the first in 1983 and the second in 2011. Both of which was a historic moment in Indian history.

Gambhir revealed that a few senior players said they “have to take the conversation away from 1983.” Kapil Dev was the captain of the Indian team that won the 1983 World Cup, whereas Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led India to win the 2011 World Cup. Gautam Gambhir said that senior player told him during the semi-final match against Pakistan.

“Two or three senior players came to me and said, ‘we need to win this tournament because we have to take the conversation away from 1983. We have to finish their thing off,” Gambhir said when interacting with The Indian Express.

“I said I haven’t come here to finish anyone. I haven’t come here to shorten someone’s line. I want to win this to extend our line. If the media is giving them jobs from 1983 to 2011, that’s the media’s problem, not ours. We need to win the World Cup because we want this country to be happy. That is something which needs to change in the future.”

Gambhir retired from international cricket in 2018. He later entered into politics and is a member of parliament in Lok Sabha. Gambhir is also support staff for the new IPL franchise, Lucknow Supergiants.
