IPL Media Rights Auction Disney Star Keep the Television Rights and Viacom18 Wins the Digital Rights for Indian Subcontinent

The Indian Premier League auction for the next five years is currently going. Various companies have bid massive amounts to acquire the rights to the league. IPL is presently the most viewed regional cricket league in the world. The auction consists of the five-year rights of the game, including Media rights in the subcontinent, per match rights, and world media rights.

Indian Premier League – IPL

A total of seven institutions were bidding for the Media rights. The media rights contain both Television rights and Digital rights. The auction started from the base price of INR 43,050 crore and ended at INR 43,575 crore. It will be the first time in many years that the monopoly of Star has broken as two different companies won the bidding for Media rights.

Disney Star won Package A, which consists of TV rights in the Indian Subcontinent for INR 23,575 crore, and Viacom18 won Package B, the Digital rights in the subcontinent. Star India paid INR 16,347.5 crore for TV and digital rights in 2017 for five years.

The cost per match has crossed to INR 107.5 crore, twice the previous cycle. Package C bidding went till INR 2000 crore for non-exclusive rights but was paused and will be resumed. The bidding for Package D will be on the third day.
