India played their first day of the fifth and the final test series against England on 1st July on Friday at Edgbaston. It is the rescheduled test match of last year, which was stopped due to Covid-19 infiltration. Rohit Sharma, the Indian captain is absent in this game after getting infected by Covid and Jasprit Bumrah is named the captain until Sharma is fully recovered.

England won the toss and decided to bowl first as the ground is known to be in favor of chasers. Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara opened the game for India, scoring 17 and 13 runs. It was a poor start for India as by the twenty-fourth over they had lost four wickets. Virat Kohli failed to score and made 11 runs. Rishabh Pant came prepared and took the game by storm. He scored a century in a partnership with Ravindra Jadeja, who made a half-century.

Both players ended their partnership with 222 runs after Pant got out after 146 runs. Jadeja scored 83 runs and ended the day not-out with Mohammad Shami. James Anderson of England got three wickets of Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Shreyas Iyer. Matthew Potts took two wickets, Hanuma Vihari and Virat Kohli. Joe Root got the wicket of Rishabh Pant with an incredible catch by Zak Crawley. Ben Stokes got Shardul Thakur.

India played seventy-three overs, losing seven players and a total score of 338 runs. Day 2 will have Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami on the pitch.
