The Indian Women’s Hockey team played the Commonwealth Games 2022 Women’s Hockey semi-finals against Australia on 5th August. Both the teams were playing exceptionally well in the semis. Rebecca Greiner from Australia scored a goal in the first quarter itself. They maintained the lead for the majority of the game. India made a comeback when Vandana Katariya equaled the score. The game ended in a tie, resulting in shootouts.
There was a time miscalculation that gave Australia an advantage over India. Each player receives eight seconds to shoot in penalty. India failed in all their chances, whereas Australia got two in a row. The third shot was deflected by captain Savita Punia, but B. Morgan failed to start the timer, and Australia received another opportunity in which they prevailed.
Indian Women’s Hockey Coach, Janneke Schopman was disappointed. She said, “After that, we lost a little bit of our momentum. Then it did go in, and everyone is deflated. I’m not using it as an excuse, but when you make the save, that’s an enormous boost for the team, and you turn the decision around, and the girls are really upset about it.”

“Girls are really upset”: Indian Women’s Hockey Coach Janneke Schopman on Clock Error against Australia, CWG Semi-Finals

Schopman narrated the incident, “The official’s hand was up, but I didn’t really know and the umpires- A Church and H Harrison of England- also did not. So, that’s why I’m frustrated because the umpires said we have to retake it. I tried to calm them down. In hindsight, it’s 50-50, but I’m sure their focus was lost a little bit after that moment.”
