FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Female Referees to Officiate the Games for the First Time

FIFA has officially announced that women referees will be part of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. Three female referees and three female assistants will be part of the officiation. A total of 129 members are selected for World Cup duty. Thirty-six referees will be present on the ground throughout the whole tournament. Sixty-nine assistant referees are also registered. Female referees will officiate the World Cup for the first time in the history of FIFA.

French Referee Stephanie Frappart will be amongst the six females officiating the Cup. She was previously part of the Men’s game in the World Cup and Champions League. Frappart also handled the 2019 Women’s World Cup and Men’s French Cup this month. Salima Mukansanga from Rwanda and Yamashita Yoshimi of Japan are also part of the leading thirty-six referees. Neuza Back from Brazil, Karen Diaz Medina of Mexico, and Kathryn Nesbitt from the United States of America will be taking part as Assistant Referees from the assigned sixty-nine.

Pierluigi Collina, FIFA Referees Committee Chairman, said, “As always, the criteria we have used is ‘quality first’, and the selected match officials represent the highest level of refereeing worldwide. In this way, we clearly emphasize that it is quality that counts for us and not genders.” She further stated, “ I would hope that in the future the selection of elite Women’s match officials for important Men’s competition will be perceived as something normal and no longer as sensational.” Collina was a part of the refereeing team back in the 2002 World Cup Final.
