Existed for a Few Years now- Sunil Gavaskar on India’s T20I Problems

Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar talked about problems the Indian team is facing in the T20I. India played their first match out of a three-match T20I series against Australia. The men in blue faced a defeat in their first match despite a good performance. India showed a lack of performance in their bowling department. They gave Australia a competitive target of 209 runs but still lost the game.

“This is India’s weakness. This isn’t a new problem. It has existed for a few years now that when they are defending they find it difficult without Jasprit Bumrah. When Bumrah is there, the score can be defended but without him, they need to look at the solution for it.  Else, going forward, it may hurl them,” Sunil Gavaskar stated on Sports Tak after the first game between India and Australia.

India’s star bowler Jasprit Bumrah was absent from the first match. He was on rest due to a recent recovery of his injury. India’s bowling also cost them to lose the Asia Cup 2022. Besides Axar Patel, the other bowlers ended their overs with 40 plus runs and no wickets.

Gavaskar was questioned on his opinion on Bumrah, to which he replied, “About his fitness, I feel that since he is such an important member of the team, the team management wants him to be entirely fair and only then he be picked in India’s XI. Maybe he will play in Nagpur.” Sunil Gavaskar stated

Gavaskar pointed out that the Indian team is only victorious when their batsmen are under pressure of winning when chasing. If the bowlers have to defend their target, India has lost plenty of times. The more time Jasprit Bumrah is off the field, the lower the chances of India’s victories.

“But here is the thing. When the Indian team is chasing a target, they win matches. But it’s the opposite the other way around. The bowling that is needed between overs 16 and 20, they still don’t have it. This is the reason that the team is ending up on the losing side.” He added.
