CWG 2022: Lovlina Stranded After Leaving Opening Ceremony Midway: The Commonwealth Games 2022 have officially begun. Yesterday on 28th July the Opening Ceremony took place in front of Britain’s Prince Charles. PV Sindhu was the Indian flag bearer with Manpreet Singh. Notably, Neeraj Chopra will be missing the CWG after getting injured at the World Athletics Championship in the USA.

Indian boxer and Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain was part of the Opening Ceremony but decided to leave the ceremony mid-way. Borgohain had a practice the day after and wanted to wake up early for the practice session. Though she was left stranded after they had no way of going back to the village.

Lovlina told the PTI about the incident, “We want to train in the morning as we have a bout day after. The ceremony will go on for a while so we thought of leaving. We asked for a taxi, but we were told that was not available.”

The Indian members arrived via bus, and the drivers were off during the ceremony, leaving Borgohain and Muhammad Hussamuddin stranded. They took the first bus to the village after waiting for nearly an hour. India’s Chef de Mission and Vice President of BFI, Rajesh Bhandari, was displeased by the behavior of Lovlina.

He stated, “There were so many athletes who decided not to come as they had training or competition in the morning, which we completely understand. I will be speaking to the boxing team on this matter.”

A total of 168 athletes and officials were part of the Opening Ceremony. It was just half of the Indian contingent. The women’s cricket team was absent as they had a match on the 29th.
