Commonwealth Games: From 1998 to 2018 India’s Performance in the Last Six Games: India has always been a good performer in the Commonwealth Games among all the countries participating in the Game. The Birmingham Games 2022 will begin on 28th July, with over 100 Indian contingents representing the country. Neeraj Chopra was supposed to be the flag bearer for India but he was ruled out of the CWG.
In this edition of the Commonwealth Games, there are no shooting contests, which will be a blow to India. India has successfully prevailed in shooting over the years. In 2010 India hosted the Commonwealth Game, which turned out to be the most successful edition. Over 72 countries participate in the Games.
Let’s go through India and the Commonwealth Games from 1998 to 2018
Commonwealth Games 1998:
Kuala Lumpur hosted the 1998 Games, becoming the first Asian nation to host. It also featured Cricket and Hockey for the first time. Sachin Tendulkar was part of the Indian Cricket Team, coming third. The Indian Hockey Team reached the semis but failed to qualify.
India finished the eighth rank in the most medal-winning countries. The total tally of medals included 25 medals. Seven gold medals, ten silver medals, and eight bronze. Jaspal Rana, Aparna Popat and Pullela Gopichand.
Commonwealth Games 2002:
Manchester hosted the first ever Commonwealth Games of the 21st Century. India had performed incredibly and gained more gold medals than their total medals last season. India won 69 medals, with 30 gold, 22 silver, and 17 bronze.
India claimed 14 gold medals in shooting, 11 in weightlifting, and 3 in boxing. The Indian Hockey Team also won their first ever gold defeating the hosts in the finals.

Commonwealth Games 2006:
Melbourne hosted the 2006 edition of the Commonwealth Games. India won 50 medals in this edition of the Games. Indian shooter Samaresh Jung won the first ever launched David Dixon Award, honoring exceptional athletes.
India won 22 gold, 17 silver, and 11 bronze medals finishing at fourth rank. Indian shooters with 16 gold medals, 7 silver, and 4 bronze.
Commonwealth Games 2010:
New Delhi hosted the Commonwealth games in 2010. It was the most successful year for India at the Games. India crossed the 100 medals mark with 101 medals at the all-time best performance till now. The Indian contingent won 38 gold, 27 silver, and 36 bronze medals, finishing in second place.
Indian women athletes were the star of the season. Krishna Poonia took the first gold in athletics after 52 years. Geeta Phogat won India’s first-ever gold medal in women’s wrestling. Ashwini Ponnappa and Jwala Gutta bagged first ever gold in double Badminton. Saina Nehwal got gold in Badminton singles and tennis champion Sania Mirza brought a silver medal. Indian shooters never failed to perform, getting 14 golds in this season.

Commonwealth Games 2014:
Glasgow hosted the 2014 Commonwealth Games. India again created history in this iteration of the Games. The country bagged 64 medals, 15 gold, 30 silver, and 19 bronze. Vikas Gowda won the first ever gold in men’s discus throw after 56 years. Joshna Chinnappa and Dipika Pallikal won the first-ever gold in squash.
Parupalli Kashyap won the first ever gold in the men’s shuttle after 32 years. Indian wrestlers won 5 gold medals and shooters won 4 medals. India finished fifth in the medal rankings
Commonwealth Games 2018:
The CWG 2018 was held at Gold Coast. India had a successful season winning 66 medals. Shooters again were the leading medal winners for CWG. India came in third in the total tally of medals. Shooters, Wrestlers, Badminton Shuttlers, and Table Tennis players are the leading medal winners for India.
Indian Shooters won 7 gold, whereas wrestlers and weightlifters bagged 5 golds. Neeraj Chopra became the only member to win gold in the javelin.
