In the men’s high jump T42 event, defending champion Mariyappan Thangavelu and Sharad Kumar won silver and bronze, respectively, as India’s medal total at the Paralympics reached a record ten on Tuesday.
Mariyappan reached 1.86m, while gold medalist Sam Grewe of the United States cleared 1.88m in his third attempt.
Kumar finished in third place with a time of 1.83.
Varun Singh Bhati, the third Indian in the competition and a bronze medalist at the 2016 Rio Paralympics, finished seventh out of nine participants after failing to clear 1.77m.
Athletes with a leg deficiency, leg length discrepancy, decreased muscle power, or impaired passive range of motion in the legs are classified as T42. In a standing stance, the athletes compete. Singhraj Adana, a shooter from India, won bronze in the men’s 10mair pistol SH1 event earlier in the day.
India has won two gold medals, five silver medals, and three bronze medals so far.
