STXfilms, a branch of Eros STX Global Corporation, announced on Tuesday that actor Deepika Padukone will star in an upcoming cross-cultural romantic comedy to be developed by the studio.
Padukone will also produce the film under her Ka Productions label. The project was announced in a statement by Adam Fogelson, head of STXfilms Motion Picture Group. The studio is also in talks to develop the concept with Temple Hill Productions’ Wyck Godfrey and producer Marty Bowen, who is known for films like the ‘Twilight’ franchise, ‘The Fault in Our Stars,‘ and ‘Love, Simon.’
Padukone’s character will star in the film, which will be a “sweeping cross-cultural love comedy.”
Padukone, who made her Hollywood debut with XXX: Return of Xander Cage in 2017, has only risen as an international superstar, according to Fogelson, who named her “one of the biggest global stars to come from India.”
“While she has been a huge hit in numerous Eros International films, we are ecstatic to be working on a romantic comedy with her and our Temple Hill pals.”
“We believe that this project will allow us to delve into the spirit, voice, personalities, and dynamic settings of India and New York in ways that made ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ feel so true and original,” said Fogelson.
Padukone stated that the goal of her production company is to support meaningful tales with worldwide appeal and that the upcoming project is in line with that philosophy.
“Ka Productions was founded with the aim to develop and produce purposeful content with global appeal,” the 35-year-old actor said.
“I’m thrilled to be partnering with STXfilms and Temple Hill Productions, that share Ka’s ambition and creative vision and look forward to bringing impactful and dynamic cross-cultural stories to the world,” she added.
Ka Productions debuted with last year’s critically praised drama Chhapaak, and has since supported films like the upcoming Kabir Khan directorial 83 and the upcoming Hindi remake of the Hollywood blockbuster The Intern.
Padukone will also star alongside Shah Rukh Khan in Shakun Batra’s untitled film for Dharma Productions and Siddharth Anand’s actioner Pathan.
