The International Olympic Committee has accepted Brisbane as the host city for the 2032 Olympics and Paralympics.
In a contest supervised by the International Olympic Committee, the Australian city was the sole bidder.
In February, the IOC granted Brisbane exclusive negotiation rights, thus ruling out potential proposals from Qatar, Hungary, and Germany.
The Games were last held in Australia in Sydney in 2000, after which they were held in Melbourne in 1956.
“We know what it takes to produce a successful Games in Australia,” Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said in a live video connection from his office to IOC voters.
In a statement, Mr. Morrison expressed his excitement, “I am especially happy” that his nation has been awarded a third Games, describing it as “a momentous day not only for Brisbane and Queensland but for the entire country.”
“We know that the impact on Sydney more than two decades ago was revolutionary, and we can now anticipate a similar impact on Brisbane and Queensland towns.
“I’m sure this news will come as a huge boost to all of our competitors as they prepare for the Tokyo Olympics, and hopefully serve as an inspiration to future generations of athletes across the country.”
“For Queenslanders and Australians worldwide, it’s a proud day.”
“We want to demonstrate to the world that mid-sized towns and regions can host the Games without financial difficulty or missed deadlines,” Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk told voters.
Queensland’s capital city, like the host city Los Angeles in 2028, will have 11 years to prepare for the Games. In 2024, Paris will host.
The city, which is located on Australia’s northeast coast, appeared to have an agreement in place months before the IOC members’ formal vote at their meeting ahead of the Tokyo Games, which begin on Friday.
The news was made on the first day of the Tokyo Olympics, which had been postponed for a year due to the COVID epidemic.
Brisbane has already put in place 84 percent of stadiums and event venues, and events will be held around Queensland, including in Gold Coast, which hosted the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
The city’s famed cricket venue, known as the Gabba, will be renovated, and the sport may be played there. If that is the case, it will be cricket’s first participation since the Paris Games in 1900.
Brisbane authorities claimed a new swimming venue is in the works, and billions of dollars would be spent on transportation improvements – not for the Olympics, but in preparation for them.
